A Painted Wingback Chair.

The leper of all chairs.

I know, it's ugly as hell. We bought this hideous chair on Craigslist. What can I say? It was cheap and so am I. Plus, it's pretty comfy! But that's not the only perk of this chair.
Perks of this chair: *greasy head stain
*old address book stuck inside the frame
                                                    *odd smell
*cat scratch damage to the back of the chair
*picked it up from the home of a woman who clearly had mental
health issues ( ie hoarding, general craziness) and gave us
a one hour tour of her home, during which my husband
whispered "Can we get the hell out of here?" and "I really
want to get the hell out of here" roughly 58 times.
All in all, a real winner.
So I cleaned this chair really well and put a quilt over the back to cuten it up (is "cuten" a word? no.)  and to cover the head stain.
But you know how I hate peach.
I was always staring at the chair with eyes of exasperation and hatred. I wasn't sure whether to just ditch it and buy a new one off of the CL or try to change it somehow. Reupholster? No way. Too expensive. Slipcover? Perhaps.
But then I saw this and I was like "I AM DOING THAT."
I was 9 months pregnant when I had this revelation, and 9 months pregnant when I painted the chair.
Remember that scene in "Elf" and Buddy went all Christmas Crazy and he turned the department store into a paper snowflake wonderland?
Oh I went crazy, my friends. I went real crazy.
I started painting stuff and I could not stop.
But let us get back to the task at hand.
here is a great tutorial. I am not doing one. I just want to show you the chair.

This was my first try. I decided the chair legs were too bright, so I switched it to Teal.

                                                                      Before and after.
Get a load of those curves.

One thing that's annoying me is that the chair leg color in these pics is not the true color. It's teal, so in reality they are way more green-blue.
                                                           RANDOM NOTES
Painting my textured chair was very very easy. Painting my velvet chair was a straight up pain in the ass.
After painting the chair, I was really afraid of sanding it because I thought I would mess it up and ruin the fabric. But it really needed to be sanded. The paint made the chair pretty stiff and not as comfy. Once I sanded the chair, it was much much softer and I loved the feel of it, as well as the look. It looks a little worn, but in a really cool way. Reminds me a little of worn leather.
DO NOT stress about this project. Stress and overthinking will get you nowhere. Just do it. This project looks more intimidating than it actually is. It's not difficult if you're using a textured chair. Take the plunge, even if you're terrified. It's so worth it!

Looking quite pleased with herself.

Btw, Pigglesworth has been on a nursing bender and has probably gained about 2 pounds in the last 2 days. Dan says her belly makes her look like a toad. As someone who has caught quite a few toads in her day ( I was a tomboy as a child), I have to admit the resemblance is strong. Anyway, this girl has prevented me from blogging since last week and I don't think she has an ounce of remorse.
Somebody pour me a stiff drink.

  1. Looks soooo much better! Don't you love when a project turns out awesome??? I've thought about painting a few furniture items around here but then I got rid of the worst offenders. Love the color choice on the legs. Great job!

  2. Although most people who seek for wingback chairs for sale are the old ones, it doesn't mean that they are the only users of them. Even younger people like you may appreciate the comfort that these types of chairs have.
