Hop

This is my youngest child. She is fourteen months old. Her name is Miabelle, but lately she has a new name: Hop.

That's because a few weeks ago, she started saying the word "hop" constantly. She usually says it in kind of a monotone voice, and it's hilarious.

She likes to get close to your face and say it.

She likes to say it while she nurses.

She likes to say it while she plays with her siblings.

She likes to say it all day.

The other night, at about 3 in the morning, she woke up from a dead sleep, sat up in our bed, smiled and said, "Hop."

No, this is actually NOT a nightmare. Real life.

WHY GOD?!?!?! WHYYYY?!??!

Remember Dan's apnea mask? I'll never let you forget it.

She continued "Hop. Hop. Ho-o-o-o-p."

"We're not hopping now. Lay down and go to sleep."

You might as well be talking to a wall.

She looks at me. She smiles. "Hop," she says.

Please put your cheer away until 7 am at the very least.

Trying to reason with her father. It's not working.

It's gotten to the point where we call her 'Hop'.

"HOP IS CRYYYYING!" call the children.

If she falls and cries, the kids come running. "Is Hop okay?!"

Babies are funny, huh? You name them one thing, but you wind up giving them all kinds of silly nicknames.

I think "Hop" might stick.

  1. My oldest said "bop" for just about everything when he was around this same age. Everybody he met and every thing he encountered was "bop." We still laugh about it now that he's three, and our 10-month old is starting to adopt "dot" as his word of choice. Babies, right? So. Weird.

  5. I have a 23 year old nephew whom EVERYONE calls "Bump." "Hop" will probably stick. ;)

  6. This is the sweetest post of all time. OF ALL TIME. I have a nearly two year old whose nickname has become Pint. As in bigger than a half pint but not quite a quart. Unfortunately, to passerby it sounds like we are calling out for beer as we chase her all over creation. Parenting, for the win.

  8. Our littlest guy's first word was "hot" and he went around saying that about everything for months. It is too funny what sticks in their little minds! Not mama, not dada, but "hot". He still says it a lot at 18 mos. LOVE this post!

  9. Boom!

I hear that all day long with my 17 month old. His dad taught him to say it when they threw the diaper in the pail. Now everything goes boom. Including in the middle of the night.

  12. That is just too sweet. Even if the nickname doesn't stick, it will make for great stories for her to tell her kids someday!

  14. So super cute! I may teach my 14-month old Mary Louise to say 'hop' in the hopes that 3am feedings can be a little cuter.

  18. Too funny! My little guy did the same thing but with the word, "stick," although it sounded more like "dick" unfortunately :) We still call him "stick" :)
